RCMA Selected as Beneficiary of Tampa Bay Rowdies’ “Posters for Purpose” Fundraiser

Tampa Bay Rowdies’ “Posters for Purpose” Fundraiser

RCMA was recently selected as one of three nonprofit beneficiaries for the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Posters for Purpose program—a unique initiative that celebrates art, community, and giving back.

Now in its 50th anniversary season, the Rowdies launched Posters for Purpose to commemorate the club’s rich history while spotlighting local artists and raising funds for deserving organizations across Florida.

We’re honored that artist Alexandra Wuyke chose RCMA as the recipient of proceeds from her piece, “Rowdies Rule the Bay.” Her colorful design is a tribute to Tampa Bay’s culture and landmarks, creatively illustrated as a regional map. The artwork also pays homage to the two stadiums that have housed the Rowdies over the years—Tampa Stadium and Al Lang Stadium.

Alexandra’s design was printed as a limited-edition 11×14 poster, with only 100 prints available through the Rowdies’ online store, TheBayRepublic.com. Priced at $40 each—or $80 for a version signed by the current team—these posters quickly became collectors’ items. Most importantly, 100% of proceeds from Alexandra’s design support RCMA’s work with Florida’s farmworker and low-income families.

Thanks to this incredible partnership and the generosity of the Rowdies and Alexandra Wuyke, RCMA will receive $5,000 to support our educational programs for children and families in Hillsborough County.

We are so grateful to be part of this meaningful project that connects sports, art, and community impact. A huge thank-you to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Alexandra Wuyke, and everyone who purchased a poster to support RCMA!

Building Bright Futures: A Visit from Our Head Start Partners

Building Bright Futures A Visit from Our Head Start Partners

At RCMA, we love welcoming visitors—especially when they’re longtime partners in our mission to serve Florida’s children and families. This month, we were honored to host representatives from Head Start at two of our most exciting construction projects: the Lipman Family Campus for Children and Families in Immokalee and the Hopewell Child Development Center in Avon Park.

Both projects are powered in part by funding from Head Start, helping us meet the need for high-quality early childhood education in these vibrant communities.

The Lipman Family Campus, named in recognition of a generous gift from Lipman Family Farms, is shaping up to be a true cornerstone for families in Immokalee. When completed, the campus will include two new child development centers, a community center, two soccer fields and a new charter school. The campus is set to open later this year.

Equally exciting is the progress being made at Hopewell, which will expand access to early education in Highlands County and give local children the strong start they deserve. Highlights of that project include several classrooms, a full-size kitchen to serve the entire campus, a welcoming center office, and a safe, modern playground for little learners to grow and play. Construction is moving swiftly, with plans to open after the holiday break.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Head Start and the Lipman Family for investing in our shared vision. Together, we’re building more than buildings—we’re building brighter futures.

Dr. Dorsey Hightower Honored with RCMA’s 2025 Brad Young in Service to Children and Families Award

IMMOKALEE, FL (May 19, 2025) – RCMA is proud to announce that Dr. Dorsey Hightower has been named the recipient of the 2025 Brad Young in Service to Children and Families Award. The award was presented during RCMA’s annual Lipman Farms Golf Classic, held last week.

Now in its fifth year, the Brad Young Award honors individuals whose dedication, generosity, and service have made a significant impact on the lives of Florida’s rural children and families. The award commemorates the late Brad Young, a passionate supporter of RCMA who gave tirelessly to advance the organization’s mission.

Dr. Hightower, a longtime Lakeland resident, is a retired veterinarian who spent most of his career serving the community through his emergency pet clinic, which he opened in 1982. His relationship with RCMA began through his wife, Sandy, who began volunteering with the organization and soon inspired Dorsey to get involved. Together, they have become active and generous supporters of RCMA’s work.

“Dorsey is someone who gives his time and heart freely,” said Isabel Garcia, RCMA’s Executive Director. “His dedication to our mission reflects the spirit of this award, and we are incredibly grateful for the ways he and Sandy have supported our children, families, and staff over the years.”

RCMA serves more than 4,600 children and families across Florida through its 53 child development centers and three community academies. The organization provides high-quality education and support services to children of low-income, agricultural-working families.

RCMA Awarded Jackie Robinson Grant from Tampa Bay Rays and Rowdies Soccer Fund

IMG 4090

IMMOKALEE, FL – April 25, 2025 – RCMA is proud to announce it has been selected as a recipient of the Tampa Bay Rays’ prestigious Jackie Robinson Grant. One of only five organizations honored this year, RCMA will receive a $20,000 grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation and Rowdies Soccer Fund in recognition of its commitment to embodying the nine core values of Jackie Robinson: courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence.

The Jackie Robinson Grant was established by the Rays in 2020 to celebrate organizations that reflect the trailblazing legacy of the late baseball icon. The announcement coincides with the 78th anniversary of Robinson breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier on April 15, 1947, when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

“We are deeply honored to receive the Jackie Robinson Grant from the Tampa Bay Rays,” said Isabel Garcia, Executive Director of RCMA. “Jackie Robinson’s values are at the heart of everything we do—his legacy reminds us that real change begins with courage and is sustained through community. This grant is a powerful affirmation of our work and will help bring new educational opportunities to hundreds of children in Mulberry.”

RCMA will apply the grant funds toward the continued development of the new Mulberry Community Academy, a K–8 charter school that is soon to break ground and will serve children of low-income and agricultural working families in Polk County. The school expands upon RCMA’s longstanding mission to provide high-quality educational opportunities and support services to Florida’s most vulnerable children and families.

The Mulberry Community Academy, which currently houses K–2 students in temporary classrooms, will ultimately grow to serve 360 students once the full campus is complete.

RCMA is Florida’s largest nonprofit provider of early childhood education and a recognized charter school operator, serving more than 4,600 children annually through its 53 child development centers and three community academies.

Ocean Reef Community Foundation invests in the safety of RCMA children

Redlands Christian Migrant Assn OCEAN REEF COMMUNITY FOUNDATION 2

RCMA has received a generous $46,025 grant from the Ocean Reef Community Foundation to enhance the safety and fun of our playgrounds in Miami-Dade! This funding will allow us to remove the existing surfaces in four playground areas and install new pour-in-place material, providing a safer, cushiony surface to help protect our children as they play and grow.

Based in Key Largo, Florida, Ocean Reef Community Foundation has been a steadfast partner in our mission, supporting vital initiatives for children and families across Miami-Dade for many years. Founded in 1994, the Foundation’s mission is to foster a culture of giving that amplifies their collective strength, inspiring generations to make Ocean Reef and the surrounding communities a better place.

The new playground surface-specifically, the installation of pour-in-place material-will significantly improve the safety of children in several key ways:

  • Enhanced Impact Absorption: Pour-in-place surfacing is designed to cushion falls and absorb shock, reducing the severity of injuries such as fractures or head trauma if a child trips or falls from playground equipment. This is especially important as falls to the surface account for nearly 70% of playground injuries.
  • Fall Height Protection: The material is engineered to meet specific standards for fall height protection, ensuring that even from elevated play structures, the surface beneath provides adequate cushioning to minimize injury risk.
  • Reduced Tripping Hazards: The new surface will be smooth and uniform, helping to prevent trips and falls that can occur on uneven or worn-out playground surfaces.
  • Weather Resistance and Traction: Pour-in-place surfacing maintains its safety features in various weather conditions, providing reliable traction and reducing the risk of slips, even when wet.
  • Improved Accessibility: This type of surface is ADA-compliant, offering a stable and level area that is accessible to children with mobility challenges, allowing all children to play safely together.
  • Durability and Consistency: The new material is long-lasting and retains its shock-absorbing properties over time, ensuring continued safety despite heavy use.

By upgrading to this modern, impact-absorbing surface, the playground will become a much safer environment where children can play, explore, and develop with a reduced risk of injury.

Thank you, Ocean Reef Community Foundation, for your ongoing commitment to our community’s children! Together, we’re building safer, brighter futures-one playground at a time.

Greater Naples Leadership Explores Immokalee, Visits RCMA’s ICA

IMG 2813

RCMA’s Immokalee Community Academy (ICA) recently welcomed members of Greater Naples Leadership (GNL) for a meaningful visit as part of their day-long exploration of Immokalee. GNL, a group of accomplished professionals dedicated to strengthening Collier County through civic engagement, spent time at ICA learning about RCMA’s mission, meeting some of its remarkable students, and being entertained by them as well.

During their visit, GNL members toured the campus, engaged with students, and gained insight into the challenges faced by farmworker families. Their experience extended beyond the classroom as they ventured into the fields of Immokalee to pick peppers, offering them a firsthand understanding of the demanding labor that supports Florida’s agricultural industry. The day concluded at Roberts Ranch, where they reflected on their experience and took home some of the fresh vegetables harvested from Immokalee’s fields.

“We are grateful to Greater Naples Leadership for taking the time to visit and immerse themselves in the daily life of the families we serve,” said Isabel Garcia, Executive Director at RCMA. “Their willingness to learn and engage helps build a stronger, more connected community.”

RCMA appreciates the commitment of organizations like GNL, whose leaders use their experience and resources to support meaningful causes. We look forward to continued collaboration in creating opportunities for children and families in Immokalee!

A Heart for Giving: The Philanthropy of Michael and Linda Leonard-Woods

Linda Leonard Woods and Michael Woods

Philanthropy is often measured by one’s time, talent, and treasure. For Michael and Linda Leonard-Woods, their giving knows no bounds—they generously offer all three. Through their unwavering dedication, this compassionate couple has become pillars of support for RCMA, helping to strengthen and uplift Florida’s farmworker communities.

Linda’s journey with RCMA began in December 2015, when she and Michael visited Immokalee. Already deeply engaged with the Farmworker Association of Florida, the couple found a new calling within RCMA’s mission. This led them to introduce others to RCMA through immersive tours that share the organization’s powerful impact.

Beyond their advocacy, Michael and Linda have taken hands-on action to meet critical community needs. They have organized and delivered food and snacks for RCMA’s afterschool programs, ensuring children have the nourishment they need to thrive. In the wake of hurricanes, they have mobilized resources to provide essential cleaning supplies to families struggling to rebuild. Their giving extends far beyond monetary donations—it is deeply personal, fueled by an unyielding compassion for those they serve.

More recently, Linda has focused her efforts on supporting RCMA’s Mulberry Community Academy, working closely with principal Dani Higgins. During the pandemic, she and Michael took extraordinary measures to combat food insecurity. Every other week, they rented refrigerated trucks to transport government-packed food boxes from St. Andrew’s Gleaning Society to farmworker communities across Mulberry, Plant City, Dover, and Highway 27. Linda’s firsthand experience as a bilingual Human Trafficking Survivor Advocate has given her an intimate understanding of the hardships faced by Florida’s rural poor, making her efforts even more meaningful.

Michael and Linda Leonard-Woods embody the true essence of philanthropy. Their selfless generosity, tireless advocacy, and hands-on support have made a profound difference in the lives of farmworker families across Florida. RCMA is beyond grateful for their unwavering commitment—a testament to the boundless power of love, kindness, and community.
