Spring is Peak Picking Season in Florida

blueberries field

Florida has more than 47,400 farms and ranches on 9.7 million acres.

And chances are, an RCMA parent works on one of them.

Spring is the busiest time for Florida farmworkers. They are currently harvesting two dozen crops outlined on the chart shown below.

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture, in 2019 Florida ranked first in the United States in the value of production for bell peppers for fresh market (45%), grapefruit (40%), oranges (51%), sugarcane, fresh market tomatoes (60%), and watermelons (29%).

The state was also second in the value of production for bell peppers, fresh market sweet corn, and strawberries; and third in fresh market cabbage, cabbage, peanuts and squash.

We thank all our RCMA parents and the families of RCMA staff who are working hard to bring these nutritious fruits and vegetables to our table!
