RCMA’s Wimauma Community Academy has fostered several relationships with many community partners over the years. Since 2017, one relationship that has truly benefited the scholars at WCA is with Gannon University. Based in Erie, Pennsylvania, students in the Occupational Therapy program from their Ruskin, Florida campus visited the WCA campus, working with first and fourth grade scholars. The Gannon students developed various “stations” where scholars learned practical knowledge using hands-on activities. Some of the stations for the first graders included internet safety, guessing the sugar content of common foods, and sequencing the steps in good hygiene. The fourth-grade scholars learned why washing hands thoroughly is important, foods and which food group they belong in, and exercising for good health.
All students in each grade level were able to experience each station, by rotating every eight minutes through the stations. Two Gannon University professors and 25 students planned and executed all of the activities. The WCA teachers and scholars had a fantastic time! We are looking forward to having them visit again next semester as well. Thank you, Gannon University!
