RCMA loves its volunteers! Meet Dean Young, a classroom volunteer for RCMA in Indian River.
“It took me a while to realize there was more to this job than helping with letters, numbers, colors and shapes. Although it is rewarding to see progress with those lessons, I realized another contribution was also important. Just how important finally struck me one day when a little girl cried because I was leaving.
On any given day there’s always one or more of these little three and four year olds who have their feelings hurt or simply need some individual attention. It is difficult for teachers to take time away from the whole class and this is where volunteers have something special to offer. Usually, some calming words and just listening to their stories and woes can make everything all better.
Judging by the excited reception upon my arrival and the clinging delays when leaving, this extra attention clearly means a lot to these kids.
It meant a lot to me also. My years as a classroom volunteer at RCMA have been one of the highlights of my retirement.
