Over the years, dealing with the after effects of hurricanes has become an all too familiar task for Floridians, and with 63 centers throughout the state, RCMA collectively holds its breath when hurricanes cross the state. The damages left behind can impact the services that the organization provides year-round. Such was the case at RCMA’s Zellwood Child Development Center following several years of hurricanes crisscrossing the area and impacting its modular classrooms.
Hurricane Idalia, which had struck in 2023, had dealt a final blow to the existing structure, hastening the need for a new, safer space for the children of Zellwood. With the support of Disaster Relief funds specifically allocated from the offices of Head Start, a new modular building has been erected to provide child development services for infants and toddlers in need.
The new modular building stands as a testament to resilience and unity, providing a secure haven for the 28 children currently served there to learn and grow. Inside, the classroom spaces are adorned with colorful decorations, educational materials, and a sense of warmth that mirrors the love and care the children receive within these walls. The facility also boasts a kitchen area where nutritious meals are prepared for the children daily.
