RCMA's 11th Annual Golf Tournament on April 24 netted proceeds of $88,935.
It was a surprising success, given the state of the economy - particularly Florida's farm economy. Last year's tournament raised a record $100,000, boosted by donations of more than $25,000 from the Florida Tomato Exchange. This year, despite the fact that January freezes decimated the tomato crop, the tomato growers donated $10,000.
The tournament unfolded on a sunny but windy Saturday that caused some shots to zoom and some to plunge. Foursomes made liberal use of $5 mulligans.
Afterward, at the Lely Resort Clubhouse, the 86 golfers were showered with more than 200 door prizes donated by friends of RCMA.
Besides the Tomato Exchange, other major contributors to the tourney were Kaplan Companies, Inc. and FoodSource Plus.
A drawing featuring a 50-inch television netted about $2,800. Many RCMA employees had bought tickets, and the TV went to Margarita Guerra, an RCMA teacher in LaBelle.
